Duke Ellington recorded two sets for Impulse!. Both ‘Meets Coleman Hawkins’ and ‘Duke Ellington And John Coltrane’ were recorded in 1962. ‘Meets Coleman Hawkins’ is the more mainstream with Coleman’s soulful tenor and the Duke’s subtle piano melding to perfection. ‘Limbo’ Jazz’, ‘Mood Indigo’ and ‘Ray Charles’ Place’ are amongst the essential Jazz grooves on offer. ‘Duke Ellington And John Coltrane’ is on first appearance a strange combination, but the mix of the old and the new works. ‘In A Sentimental Mood’ is masterful. ‘Take The Coltrane’ gives the ‘Trane spin on the standard. The combination excels on ‘Stevie’ and the ‘The Feeling Of Jazz’.
