Debut album from Chicago based Kenya McGuire Johnson, ‘My Own Skin’ is a strong, 14 track album of well crafted smooth soul tracks and uptempo, funkier grooves – a mix of mid tempo ballads and really good, catchy dance tracks like the funky, hip shaker ‘I Can’t Help It’ that has a good, spacey jazz funk feel in part. ‘Let Me’ is a silky, sophisticated mover and ‘My Heart’ has a slight latin vibe permeating the uptempo dancefloor driven direction. The title track ‘My Own Skin’ is a polished, throwback tune: lots of percussion bubbling under with tinkling pianos and walking B-lines combining well to create another uptempo, dancefloor smash. ‘Wednesday Girl’ is a mellow, jazz influenced slow burner giving Kenya’s voice space to really express, ‘Be Here’ is a classy beat ballad featuring past collaborators Kloud 9 on guest vocals, while ‘Never Giving Up’ has a swaggering, jazzy-soul feel. Really strong set.
