Raw, fiercely delivered and totally on point with the current interest in the harder gospel sound, Eli Paperboy Reed has sidestepped his usual 50s influenced R&B and reinvented himself as a sandpaper voiced preacher of sanctified pulpit sermons with ‘My Way Home’. ‘Hold Out’ thunders along with a no holds barred message, the funky edged ‘Cut Ya Down’ is an uptempo dancer with a raucous vibe, ‘Tomorrow’s Not Promised’ comes closest to the R&B style he’s better known for with some superb shades throughout, ‘Eyes On You’ has a wonderful live feel with the expansive production fitting the message perfectly while the superb ‘I’d Rather Be Alone’ has bluesoul tones. ‘A Few More days’ races along and sounds like a collision between gospel, funk and Psych while the ender ‘What Have We Done’ calms everything down and is the most stripped back track on the album. Brilliant throwback raw soul/gospel interpretation.
