Ex Horace Silver sideman, tenor saxophonist Bob Berg hits the ground running with his debut ‘New Birth’. The ballad ‘You’re My Thrill’ is converted into a blistering Mambo. ‘Neptune’ is a fast acoustic bass led jazzy tune with Berg in full flow as is pianist Cedar Walton. There is a great Latin tinged take on ‘This Masquerade’. ‘Magic Carpet’ is a gritty piece of Jazz Funk. ‘Shapes’ is a mystical and atmospheric finale to a very strong and quite varied album.
