Speedometer have been one of the leading British Funk bands for over a decade. They follow up the superb album they recorded with former James Brown vocalist Martha High by joining forces with UK vocalist James Junior (whose voice is not unlike Tony Momrelle) for this excellent funky soul set which has jazzy overtones. Andy Fairclough stars on keyboards and organ on the up tempo ‘Don’t Fool Yourself’. ‘Bad Note’ is a brassy mid tempo funky groove, and ‘No Turning Back’ an up tempo jazzy soul shifter. ‘I showed them (The Ghetto)’ is an interesting adaptation of the Hathaway/Hutson classic with a touch of Cal Tjader thrown in for good measure. ‘Mirage’ is an urgent Jazz funk dancer whilst ‘Just The same’ has that retro Soul feel similar to the Daptone recordings. The two instrumentals ‘Orisha’s Party’ and the great version of Pharrell’s ‘Happy’ show what the band can do with Junior. Strong album.
