Stunning debut album from singer-composer Rita Ray from Estonia full of powerful, warm vocals and crisp production. Slower, bluesy R&B numbers that bring to mind the more plaintive side of Daptone et al blend with uptempo cuts that add a good balance to the album. The sublime ‘How Much Can A Small Heart Take’ is a stunning slab of crossover that is sure to pick up plays, the pacey ‘Disco Stu’ is anything but disco – it’s a fast paced dancer that soars – while the beat ballad ‘Oh Honey’ brings to mind the likes of Kelly Finnigan and Bobby Oroza. The swirling southern soul of ‘Fool For Loving You’ kicks hard while ‘Little Girl’ and ‘Losing It’ are also strong highlights on an 8-track album that ranks high as a first release. Brilliant stuff.
