Freddie Hubbard recorded his Blue Note debut album on 19th June 1960. The line-up features Tina Brooks on tenor sax, McCoy Tyner on piano, Sam Jones bass and drummer Clifford Jarvis. The album comprises three originals two from Brooks and one from Hubbard plus three standards. It is a swinging date with the Eastern flavoured ‘Open Sesame’, the beautiful ‘Gypsy Blue’, ‘All Or Nothing At All’ and the popular blues song ‘One Mint Julep’ all stellar Bop grooves. Performances from both horn players are fiery whilst Tyner adds his fluid stylish piano to the mix. The ballad ‘But Beautiful’ a Bing Crosby tune from the ‘Road To Rio’ film and is stunning in its beauty and simplicity. ‘Hub’s Nub’ provides a wonderful brash, bright and optimistic finale. Excellent debut.
