Out Of The Cool

Arranger and pianist Gil Evans is most famous for his work with Miles Davis (‘Porgy and Bess’, ‘Miles Ahead’ and ‘Sketches Of Spain), and ‘Out Of The Cool’ is amongst the finest orchestrated Jazz albums from the early sixties. It kicks off with the sublime 15-minute long modal masterpiece ‘La Nevada’. Evans’ arrangements are always interesting and innovative, none more so than on George Russell’s futuristic ‘Stratusphunk’ and on the haunting ‘Where Flamingos Fly’. The album features Elvin Jones and Ron Carter as well as several superb trumpet solos from Johnny Coles. One of the best albums released on Impulse!
