Vibraphonist Dave Peak recorded his second album, ‘Pike’s Peak’ in Nov 1961. The quartet features drummer Walter Perkins, bassist Herbie Lewis (outstanding) and the wonderful Bill Evans on piano. ‘Why Not’, Pike’s answer to ‘So What’ grooves relentlessly. Brilliant hardly does it justice. ‘Vierd Blues’ bubbles with Pike at his most lyrical; Evans is stunning. ‘Besame Mucho’ is a heavier with a modal deep running groove. ‘Pike’s Peak’ is a fine fine set.
