Organist, Chester Thompson, recorded ‘Powerhouse’ for Black Jazz Records in 1971 two years before he joined Tower Of Power.  It features a quartet with Raymond Pounds on drums, Rudolph Johnson on saxophone and Al Hall on trombone.  Thompson wrote all four tracks.  ‘Mr T’ is a driving Hammond workout that grooves incessantly and stands comparisons with contemporary releases by Charles Earland and Lonnie Smith.  The lengthy ‘Trip One’ is a fast, swinging jazzy groove.  The staccato ‘Weird Harold’ opens side two in funky style and will be recognizable to lovers of Thompson’s compositions for Tower of Power.  The finale ‘Powerhouse’ is classic heavy-duty Hammond led Jazz Funk that gritty and powerful.  ‘Powerhouse’ is a superb set, whose only shortcoming is its brevity at 27 minutes.
