Recorded in 1962, ‘Preach Brother’ finds tenor saxophonist Don Wilkerson in fine fettle. The 50’s R&B influence is to the fore especially on the rollicking Rock n Roll inspired ‘Jeanie Weenie’. In contrast ‘Homesick Blues’ is a very slow Blues that lives up to its title. Standout track is the popular Jazz dance tune ‘Des Tambourines’ that has a wonderful Soul Jazz feel with a dose of church Gospel thrown in. ‘Camp Meetin’ is another R&B stomper, whilst ‘The Eldorado Shuffle’ slows things to a mid-tempo blues. There is a more upbeat vibe to ‘Pigeon Peas’ on which Grant Green’s sharp guitar playing is a highlight. The band features Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums alongside the main soloists Wilkerson and Green. ‘Preach Brother’ is highly regarded and a pinnacle amongst Blue Note’s Soul/ R&B come Jazz dates.
