Debut album from London’s Soul Grenades ‘Pullin’ The Pin’ mixes high octane, hard hitting dancefloor funk with some well crafted soul numbers on an album that really grows. You’d imagine their live performances are electric judging by tracks like ‘Play Dem games’, ‘Voice Of Change’ and ‘Don’t Let It Work On You’ but the soulful numbers excel too: ‘Sunshine’ is a superb, uptempo soul dancer while the mellow warmth of ‘Don’t Give Up On Love’ is a welcome breather from the taut, tough funk that surrounds it. ‘Funk It Up’ bookends the album and perfectly captures the band’s ethos – energetic, bustling, heavy rhythms and big, brassy stabs underpinned by rolling b-lines and Sabina’s strong vocals. Well worth adding to your listening shelf or DJ box!
