Russell Gunn’s multi-piece ensemble the Royal Krunk Jazz Orkestra wowed us with their last album ‘Get It How You Live’ and Pyramids follows that up with another set heavy on the Egyptian inspired spiritual jazz tip. The intense, driving force that is ‘Black Indian Rain Dance’ forges ahead with that big, bold brass section, ‘Kabla Khufu’ is more abstract yet retains structure while ‘Voyage Of The Pyramid Builders’ sounds like soundtrack. The expansive ‘Pan-Afrikan Benediction’ is a ponderous, bluesy gem, the shimmering ‘The Truth of Time’ has a dub underbelly while ‘Olmec (Xi) offers quieter moments amidst the bustle. Another great new jazz offering.
