Twenty tracks of gritty R&B and Bossa Nova the blend is strong here with a mix of hard instrumentals and tough vocal cuts. Little Esther (Phillips) delivers the sassy ‘Cherry Wine’, Juanita Nixon’s ‘Stop Knockin’ is a brooding R&B dancer while King Syam provides the blues with ‘Syam’s Blues’. Gene Wilson’s ‘Love Love Love Dream’, Lula Reed & Freddy King’s ‘Shame On You’, Clarence Paul’s ‘Baby Don’t You Leave Poor Me’ and Young John Watson’s ‘Space Guitar’ are stylistically different but stand as highlights on a set that will please those into late 50s/early 60s Rhythm and blues and it’s many offshoots.
