Snarky Puppy vocalist Shayna Steele releases her sophomore project in the form of ‘Rise’ a multi-influence soaked eleven track offering of jazz, gospel, soul and folk. The jaunty ‘Sunshine Girl’ is a lighthearted finger clicker while the full band soul jazz of ‘Everybody’s Cryin’ Mercy’ has a Marlena Shaw feel. ‘Gone Under’ is a brilliant, moody mid tempo funky-soul dancer while her version of ‘Grandma’s Hands’ blends gospel with folky soul to perfection and is beautifully stripped back. ‘Coulda Had Me’ is mainly Shayna and a piano (before the band come in for the crescendo) and showcases her strong voice while ‘Hyde Park’ had echoes of Corrine Bailey Rae in both the production and the vocals.
