‘The Rumproller’ was recorded in April 1965 and was response to the success, unexpected success at that of ‘The Sidewinder’. Lee Morgan had recorded two sessions in between with a sextet – the brilliant ‘Search For A New Land’ and ‘Tom Cat’ but neither had anything close to the hit. Andrew Hill’s ‘The Rumproller’ is not dissimilar in feel to ‘The Sidewinder’ possessing that 60’s swagger. Lee Morgan’s own ‘Eclipso’ is a Bossa-ish blues with Morgan in especially rumbustious form. ‘Edda’ by Wayne Shorter is a bright and brash slice of mid 60’s Blue Note with it fast pace and is a waltz.
