This 1963 live album recorded at the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen is full of atmosphere and energy and holds up as an important document of modal jazz. You can hear the audience in the background behind the band enhancing the live feel and the announcements from Sahib give the impression that a good time was had by all that evening! ‘4070 Blues’ rides along on an urgent bassline with Shihab’s flute weaving in and out, ‘Charade’ has an almost bossa rhythm with the reed dominating while ‘Conversation’s comes in three parts. ‘Part One’ thunders along with the sax competing with the two drummers on this track. ‘Part Two’ slows down, stretches out and the flute and trumpet converse throughout while ‘Part Three’ again picks up the again the brass is at the forefront while the drummer tries to kick everything out of sight. Phenomenal record.
