New York Producer, songwriter and engineer Anu Sun has created a genre-merging album in the form of ‘Sanguine Regum’ that seamlessly melds Hip-Hop, Rock, R&B and Jazz into a single composition with the help of Robert Glasper and Maurice Brown among other distinguished players. There’s a heavy socio-political slant to many of the tracks here with hard hitting , often searching, lyrics that both reflect and ask questions of life in America today. “No Sun” is a more mellow moment amdist tougher tracks such as the ‘Blow Your Head’ sampling ‘Prey’ or the full on, thumping beat of ‘Sanguine Regum’. The chilled out ‘Afro Blue’ contrasts with the jagged egdes of ‘Vice Grip’ while the busy jazzer ‘Where’d Go Wrong and the lazy groove of ‘HateIEvaMetcha’ are also highlights. Check out the languid vibe of ‘Rise!’ too. Uneasy listening and music with a message.
