Saxophonist Lou Donaldson was another long term artist for the Blue Note label , recording his debut in 1953 and final album for the label In 1974. ‘Say it loud’ from 1969, is a fine example of his Soul Jazz  sound, accompanied by an organ that he perfected in the 1960s. He is joined by a great band featuring Charles Earland on organ,  Idris Muhammad on drums, Blue Mitchell on Trumpet and Jimmy Ponder on Guitar. The title track is a funky Jazz cover of James Brown anthem ‘Say It Loud I’m Black and I’m Proud’, Lou’s smooth playing riding over the solid rhythm section with Earland’s organ to the fore. Lou also gets funky on his own compositions ‘Snake Bone’ and ‘Brother Soul’ . His covers of the Jazz standards Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’ and Ellington’s ‘Caravan’ are also very listenable. Nice album that reflects the period.
