Really good sophisticated vocal jazz from a young talent. Laurence Desberg’s “Sideways” is a largely straight up affair that pays homage to jazz from a classic age while also keeping it modern. Mentored by Gretchen Parlato, Desberg’s voice effortlessly glides over the tight, rock solid backing provided by jazz heavyweights including Dayna Stephens on tenor sax and Taylor Eigsti on piano, Josh Crumbly on bass Chris Smith on bass and Corey Fonville on drums. Her cover of “Mister Magic” is sublime, Herbie’s “Come Running To Me” skits and flits wonderfully, and “You Go To My Head” is graced by Parlato’s assured vocals.
