Solis Lacus is an interesting discovery, a cosmic Jazz Fusion album made in Belgium in 1975, which has all the hallmarks of a contemporary recording on the CTI label , or of those of Herbie Hancock. Solis Lacus were a five piece band and the keyboards and horns are to the fore. ‘Utopic Cities’ has a really nice groove, ‘Please Please’ starts slow then builds into a stormer. ‘Little Green man’ and ‘Remake’ have a more jazz funk groove. ‘Solis Lacus refers to as part of Mars and you can hear where they have drawn inspiration from as the music has a spacey feel to it. Really nice album which had it come out in USA at the time would be well known in Jazz circles. Gwen McCrae features on the uptempo dancers ‘Let Me Do My Thang’ and ‘Happy’. Ron Carroll and Byron Stingly add to the mid tempo dancer ‘I Owe My Love To You’ Juliet Edwards on the appropriately titled ‘Groove Out Your Funky Soul’ Roy Ayers ‘Dangerous Vibes’ and Ann Sexton on ‘Rising Up’ . Strong happy uplifting summertime record.
