‘Song For My Father’ was Horace Silver’s most commercially successful track and album. The original album comprised two sessions with two entirely different quintets and recorded a year apart.   Two tracks ‘Calcutta Cutie’ and ‘Lonely Woman’ feature the group that Silver had for the five years prior to the recording date of 31st October 1963. That band features Junior Cook (tenor), Blue Mitchell (trumpet), Roy Brooks (drums) and bassist Gene Taylor. The other four tracks including ‘Song For My Father’ were laid down on October 1964 with a new group that includes tenor maestro Joe Henderson, Carmell Jones on trumpet, Roger Humphries on drums and Teddy Smith on bass.  The magnificent ‘Song For My Father’ starts the album on a high.  The tribute to Silver’s Dad has everything from a great melody, a groove, wonderful ensemble playing and a blistering solo from Joe Henderson.  ‘The Natives Are Restless Tonight’ is fast moving Hard Bop number that characterizes Silver to a tee.  ‘Calcutta Cutie’ is an under-stated, underpinned by Silver’s percussive piano style and topped by a contrastingly light melodic touch.  The slow building, Latin infused ‘Que Pasa’ builds gradually to a sparkling crescendo, though it too has an under-stated, brooding feel.  Joe Henderson’s ‘The Kicker’ is a compelling fast tempo-ed Hard Bop gem that races along at break-neck speed.  Henderson and Silver’s solos are up to the challenge, whilst drummer Humphries enters his own storming drum solo.   The lilting ‘Lonely Woman’ is gentle conclusion to a top draw set of Horace Silver numbers that is regarded as a Blue Note classic, and rightly so.
