Courtney Pine’s 16th studio album ‘The Ballad Book’ sees the UK Jazz legend stripping everything back until all that’s left is just himself on bass clarinet and Zoe Rahman on piano. Sam Rivers’ ‘Beatrice’ opens up a set of delicate, meandering and beautiful compositions which sees Pine taking on a grip of his favourite classic and contemporary ballads. ‘Amazing Grace’ opens with an incredible deep growl from both instruments before clearing into a light drenched, almost reverential gossamer like ode. Donny Hathaway’s ‘Someday We’ll All Be Free’ has a floating, fibrous quality while Chaka Khan’s ‘Through The Fire’ is a subtle, smooth and tender interpretation without being saccharine. Brian McKnight’s ‘One Last Cry’ has a bittersweet tone while ‘A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square’ shows just how strong and controlled Pine’s playing is.
