This set from 1973 preceded his classic ‘Mister Magic’; originally a luxury double vinyl box set, the album shows the growing maturity of Grover as an artist and sax player. Two elongated covers of Soul cuts Marvin’s ‘Trouble Man’ and the Temps ‘Masterpiece’ are funky Jazz opuses with wonderful orchestrations arranged by Bob James. ‘Taurian Matador’ is a little more leftfield but is still a superb cut. On Billie Holiday’s ‘Don’t Explain’, Grover’s playing is particularly soulful; he was honing that warm sound that he was to become renowned for. Brilliant.
