Ex James Brown sideman delivers a live album entitles ‘Soul Classics’. Recorded in Germany with a big band and a rhythm section that features Christian McBride. Of 10 tunes, one is self penned and the rest classic tunes. ‘Soul Power’ and ‘Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag’ are from the Brown songbook’ A bluesy/ Jazz version of Stevie’s ‘Higher Ground is another highlight, as is Aretha’s ‘Rock Steady’. Though recorded live, it sounds as if it is a studio set and the big band is great.
