Stellar afro-funk album that was initially released as a fake long-lost 70s release, it later became apparent that the musicians were actually core members of The Dap Kings and Antibalas as well as Fela Kuti drummer/percussionist Jojo Kou. Fifteen years on from its first release this still sounds fresh and vital. ‘Musicawa Silt’ is an epic in two parts driven by that chugging groove driven on by the horn section, the syncopated drums of ‘Quiet Man Is Dead Man’ is classic Daptone in feel while the version of ‘Give It Up, Turnit Loose’ is as close to authentic Nigerian funk as you’d want. Every track here is worthy of mention but the pacey ‘Upside Down’ and the crashing ‘Voodoo Soul Stew’ are highlights on a set of classic afro-funk gems.
