Epic undertaking by lifelong soul fan John Lias, this heavyweight, 400+ page tome is a mine of information focused purely on Soul Lps. The main thrust of the book is both a discography of the Soul output of the broad span of artists featured here and John’s own critique of a selection of the albums as well as catalogue and date information (where known) It’s part fact/part opinion and for that reason it’s a fascinating read. As useful as a reference tool as it is as something to dip into this book is a must for soul fans!

  1. stormcock

Spellbinding effort. Mr Lias covers virtually every soul album under A-L in a very readable and informed style. At times thought provoking but mostly spot on. Does not get blinded by reputation or rarity value. This was clearly a labour of love and it shows. There are also eight pages of photos of covers. Can’t wait until second volume is out in a couple of years

Much respect to the author for what must have been an exhausting effort. I disagree with John’s opinions on records to some degree (inevitably), but I nevertheless took great pleasure in reading this book, and will surely return to it now and then.

    Excellent book.
