L.A Based 4th Coming were the brainchild of Henry “Hank” Porter who guided the group through four years of largely obscure and under distributed 45s. This set collects together the group’s total output and represents a tantalising glimpse into the sound of a persistent underground soul act trying to make it. The most well known of the group’s releases is the eerie synth funk of ‘The Dead Don’t Die Alive’ picked up on by DJ Shadow, but the lesser heard tunes are well worth a look. The crashing soul of ‘Take Time’ has a real West Coast feel, while the country-gospel fusion of ‘Heaven And Earth’ is catchy. The title track ‘Strange Things’ has a languorous, funk edge, while ‘We Got Love’ recorded for Len Jewel’s Pzazz label is a funky soul head nodder with a psych twist. Really interesting stuff.
