Twelve track offering from the legendary sax player Pee Wee Ellis, ‘Tenoration’ shows one half of Ellis’ funk side and the other his jazz leanings. ‘Slanky’ is a laid back, languorous groove that builds and slides and shimmies, James Brown’s ‘Gittin A Little Hipper’ is a faster tempo number while Cannonball Adderley’s ‘Sticks’ is presented twice: the 10:43 min version has more funk while the shorter take is a jazz take. Eddie Harris’ ‘Freedom Jazz Dance’ is a bustling, energetic hard-bop delight while the more subdued ‘Bon Bonn’ majors on the interplay between Ellis’ horn and Dan Moore’s warm keys.
