Bassist Bill Dickens is a thoroughbred with an enviable resume having worked with a raft of big names including Chaka Khan, Pat Metheny, Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige and the Ramsey Lewis Trio as well as being part of the Meters Experience. With ‘Tha Truth’ Bill Dickens explores the varied array of musical styles that has informed his tastes over three decades, kicking off with the slap bass, early 80s sounding funker ‘Tha Truth’. ‘Footprints’ is a fast paced jazz fusion number while ‘A Day At The Beach’ is a breezy, laid back airy jazz number: not quite smooth but certainly mellow. ‘Vibe’ is another highlight with some Hancock-like keys over the stepping b-lines and live drums, ‘Steppin To A Groove’, ‘The Chicken’ and ‘That’s It’ are super funky and reminiscent of some of Paul Jackson’s work on his recent ‘Groove Or Die’ set, ‘Neo Soul’ is another mellow highlight, there’s strong versions of ‘People Make The World Go Round’ and ‘What’s Going On’, while the funky, Eastern vibe of ‘T.C Jam’ shows yet another dimension to this really solid album.
