‘The American Negro’ is an expansive 26 track document that multi-instrumentalist Adrian Younge has put together to deliver an unapologetic critique, detailing the systemic and malevolent psychology that afflicts people of colour. Interspersed with spoken word passages, the musicianship is top quality with a jazz leaning not unlike a lot of his previous work. Expansive soundscapes abound, heavily percussive and a laid back tempo give many of the tracks an hypnotic air. The soulful ‘Light On The Horizon’ contrasts with the syncopated jazz of ‘The American Negro’, ‘Revolutionize’ and ‘Rotten Roses’ while cuts like ‘James Mincey Jr’ and ‘Margaret Garner’ spotlight two figures fro Black History that are notable for the sacrifices they made. Another strong work from this far seeing creative.
