The thirteenth studio album from notorious playboy R. Kelly, ‘The Buffet’ is less a collection of songs about a table groaning under the weight of an ostentatious feast of food and drink than a journey through R Kelly’s – at times – one track adult mind. The first seven tracks are brusque R&B cuts that are at best thinly veiled suggestive come-ons and at worse, downright bawdy! Sitting right in the eye of the storm, though, are a handful of really strong soul cuts that hint at what might have been had Mr Kelly reigned in his passions a bit more. ‘All My Fault’, the stepping ‘Wake Up Everybody’ (not a Harold Melvin cover, btw) ‘Get Out Of Here With Me’ and the summery, easy going ‘Backyard Party’ shine out for their soulfulness amidst the harsher tone of the previous tracks. ‘Keep Searchin’ and the southern influenced ‘Sufferin’ (about the trials and tribulations of a multi-millionaire: hard to sympathise maybe…) will also appeal to soul fans. Warning: much of this may not be, as they say ‘safe for work’!
