These recordings document the fledgling career of Herbie Hancock when he was 21/ 22. It includes his debut with the Donald Byrd and Pepper Adams Quintet including a brilliant version of ‘Out Of This World’. It also features his debut set in full ‘Taking Off’, the highlight of which is his classic ‘Watermelon Man’. There other collaborations most notably with Byrd such as ‘Chant’ and ‘Nai Nai’ but also Eric Dolphy, Grant Green, Freddie Hubbard and Roland Kirk.
