1965 album that features Willie Bobo on percussion, Grady Tate on drums and Richard Davies on bass on a grip Ashby’s own works and covers. The brooding, moody ‘Essence Of Sapphire’ is a strong highlight with its walking bass, waltz like tempo and Ashby’s faultless playing creating a sombre air of foreboding. It sounds like the blueprint on which the sound on Matthew Halsall’s ‘Into Forever’ was based! The cover of ‘Feeling Good’ takes the standard into new dimensions with that wiry bass and harp working together well, ‘House Of The Rising Sun’ again tackles a classic and gives it a new edge – a finger clicking rhythm with Ashby stroking the strings and plucking out the tune while ‘Why Did You Leave Me’ swings and builds with the horn section carrying the mood well. Really pleasing album.
