The Gumption is Canadian Soulstress Tanika Charles’ second album for Record Kicks and the modern vintage is still firmly in place. The superbly uplifting ‘Remember To Remember’ has echoes of ‘I Can’t Help Myself’ and ‘My Ever Changing Moods’, the darker, sassy ‘Tell me Something’ is a sublime slow tempo burner while the infectiously upbeat ‘Going Home’ defies you to keep your feet still! ‘Cool Scorpio’ and ‘Look At Us Now’ are deep beat ballads while the warm, crossover of ‘Since You been Gone’ is also a highlight. The funkier, syncopated ‘First & Last’ is also a strong point on a great album
