Trumpeter Donald Byrd was one of the founding fathers of Jazz Funk and the Blackbyrds were his famous proteges. This wonderful 3 CD set celebrates the music that Byrd and the Blackbyrds recorded in the seventies and very early eighties. There are 39 tracks – most will need little introduction, but here are some of the highlights. From the trumpeter’s late Blue Note period, there are gems like the ground- breaking ‘Black Byrd’, the flowing ‘Love’s So Far Away’, the Jazz Funk dance classic ‘Dominoes’, ‘Think Twice’. ‘Wind Parade’ and ‘Lansana’s Priestess’. When Byrd moved to Elektra in 1977, he could still deliver tunes like ‘Thank You For Funking Up My Life’, ‘Love Has Come Around’ and ‘I Feel Like Loving You Today’. The Blackbyrds included some of his students from Howard University; they enjoyed huge success with ‘Walking In Rhythm’. Other classics also featured on this compilation are ‘Rock Creek Park’, the street Funk of ‘Do It Fluid’, the infectious ‘Gut Level’ and ‘Supernatural Feeling’. Great stuff.
