Largely under heard, private press soul/jazz-fusion album from US ex-pat Larry Rose who took off and left for Amsterdam in the early 70s, travelled and taught music before recording The Jupiter Effect, his one and only album in 1978 with a talented bunch of (mainly Netherlands based) musicians. The jazzy, blue eyed fusion ‘Papa’ is a funk laced uptempo number, the slower ‘Blues Are Dying’ has a southern soul tinged feel while the MOR ‘Looking’ brings to mind yacht sounds with it’s pastiche gentle rumba. The highlight of the album is the fierce, funky fusion of ‘Who Conned The Lady’; a shape incisive horn laced slab of soulful fusion that allows the band to indulge in solos that culminate in a crescendo, while the airy jazz of ‘Sand’ brings to mind Spaceark at their most mellow. Good excavated album that sees a timely reissue.
