The fact that Betty Harris was actually a Florida native who jetted into New Orleans to record the sides collected here is irrelevant as the Crescent City sound is evident on every one of the 17 cuts issued between 1964 and 1969. The funk classic ‘There’s A Break In The Road’ sounds as good now as the first time, ‘Mean Man’ has an instantly recognisable intro and pounds along with an infectious beat, ‘Trouble With My Lover’ and ‘Show It’ are both solid dancers while ‘I’m Evil Tonight’ has sass and style wrapped up in a slinky groove. ‘Nearer To You’ is the pick of the slower ballads while her version of ‘Ride Your Pony’ gallops along at pace. Good gathering of material from this big voiced songstress.
