This one is a forgotten gem, and, another overlooked fact, groundbreaking. Here Miles laid the foundations for his famous quintet with Coltrane. One might say he is sorely missed here, which might explain the record for having slipped off the radar, but that is missing the point. Of course, the interplay between these two so different hornplayers was exhilarating, but the foundation for it was found here, and somehow there is a charm in this more subdued album where the poetry of Miles is not attacked by the wild beatnik prose of Coltrane and creates an atmosphere of less tension yet totally enthralling dreamlike seducement.
