Long-awaited comeback from Soul-pop legend P.P Arnold, ‘The New Adventures Of…’ consists of a generous 15 tracks and kicks of with the gorgeous ‘Baby Blue’ – a bittersweet, 60s drenched beat ballad that has a cheeky Maisonettes reference, the cavernous ‘Though It Hurts Me Badly’ is full of emotion while ‘The Magic Hour’ sounds like a canned, wall of sound production from the swinging 60s. The superb, up-tempo bluesy ‘I’m A Believer’ is a highlight, the curveball 90s afro house ‘Hold On To Your Dreams’ is totally unlike anything else on the album and harks back to her work from that era while the swaying blues-ballad ‘Finally Found My Way Back Home’ is a fine slab of melodrama. Her cracked, soul/gospel vocals hold up well across the set and she’s maybe never sounded so gritty as on her cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘Last Thoughts Of Woody Guthrie, where she raps over a near 10-minute, totally engaging ghetto funk workout – definitely a highlight of the album.
