James Brown recorded ‘The Payback’ in 1973, one his most productive years, it is undoubtedly his best and one of the best Funk albums of all time. Many of the tracks were apparently originally recorded for ‘Hell Up In Harlem’ soundtrack but rejected.
‘The Payback’ is a killer hard hitting mid tempo funk groove that has been sampled numerous times. ‘Take Some Leave Some’ is another mid tempo funk song with great horns from Maceo, St Clair Pinkney and Fred Wesley. ‘Stone To The Bone’ is another killer Funk track with a great guitar riff from Jimmy Nolen. ‘Mind Power’ is a monster ten minute funky groove with positive lyrics, ten minutes of musical excellence. ‘Shoot Your Shot’ has a more urgent groove , funky or what ?. There also some really good mid tempo soul cuts like ‘Doing The Best I Can’ and the dead slow ‘Forever Suffering’. Overall a great album that still sounds great over 50 years on, one of our music’s genuine classics.
