Guitarist Mel Brown recorded several albums for Impulse! spanning six years from 1967 -1973. ‘The Wizard’ dates from 1968 and features a funky version ‘Ode To Billie Joe’ and Mel’s own ‘Swamp Fever’. His playing reflects the Blues inflections that earned him sideman duties with the likes of B B King and John Lee Hooker. Brown’s guitar is perfectly at home in a Funk settings like ‘African Sweets’ and the slower ‘Chunk A Funk’. ‘Blues For We’ as its titles suggest is a bluesier affair. Covers of ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’ and ‘Stranger on the Shore’ show Mel Brown’s versatility.
