OV Wright was something of an ‘unsung legend’ that was often compared to Otis Redding and Solomon Burke with a powerful, expressive voice and a distinctive style. Fans of early 60’s are well served here with the likes of the atmospheric ‘Poor Boy’ and ‘Gone for Good’ while the bluesy ‘Eight Men and Four Women’ and the stomping ’What Did You Tell This Girl Of Mine’ are also among his best. Also in the blues vein the wrought tension in ‘A Nickel And A Nail’, ‘I’ll Take Care Of You’ and ‘Drowning On Dry land’ are superb. O.V Wright managed to marry southern soul with a rich blues sentiment that at times produced some stunning results. Well worth investigating.
