The brainchild of Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One, Tuxedo’s debut self titled set is a classy excursion through the world of well written and produced throw back early 80s styling: slicked back funk, synth soul and banging boogie wrapped up with a modern day approach to making new lost bygone grooves. The whole set sounds like it could actually be something pulled from a long neglected reel, left shelved since 1982. Every tune has an infuriating catchiness, from the mid-tempo opener ‘Lost Lover’ to the earworm of ‘Are U Ready’, the laser-funk keys of ‘I Got U’ to the yacht-soul of ‘Two Wrongs’ right through to the pacier ‘Do It’ big boogie of ‘Number One’. Slick, sassy and so on point. 80s fans looking for a time capsule find – this is a good start. Brilliant! (JS)
