‘Una Mas’ is Kenny Dorham’s fourth album for Blue Note; it was recorded on 1st April 1963 and released in January the following year. The original album comprised only three tracks – all Dorham originals. It is a case of quality over quantity. Joe Henderson shares the horn duties on tenor. The rhythm section comprises Herbie Hancock on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and the teenage protegee Tony Williams is on drums. The fifteen minute ‘Una Mas’ opens the album in a Bossa influenced style, that in essence is still a blues. A strong groove supports a tremendous contribution from the trumpet maestro and a typically sinewy solo from Joe Henderson. Hancock’s playing belies his still tender years; his maturity is amazing. Kenny’ solo on ‘Straight Ahead’ is well rounded and full Of warmth. Henderson’s intense tenor is full of Soul and the influence of Coltrane can be clearly heard. Dorham was inspired to write the infectious ‘Sao Paolo’ following a visit to the Brazilian city in 1960.
