Kenyan group Matata arrived in the UK in the early 1970s and brought with them a fusion of African rhythms with a love of the hard funk sound of the USA. They were contemporaries of Osibisa and Cymande among others and this collection brings together their complete President recordings as well as four tracks recorded later. ‘Wild River’ is a pulsating chant and call afro-funker, ‘Jungle Warrior’ has that classic afro-beat feel in the horns while ‘I Need Somebody’ bears influences from South America. ‘Wanna Do My Thing’ is their best know track – a funky JB-gone-afro funk track – ‘I Feel Funky’ and ‘I want You’ also owe a debt to the Godfather while ‘Something In Mind’ is a great East African dancer. Lots of great styles here from a super tight outfit that will please fans of African music as well as funk fans.
