Saxophonist and clarinetist Shabaka Hutchings – a member of esteemed jazz collectives Sons Of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming – reunites with the “Ancestors” collective of South African musicians to follow up the critically acclaimed ‘Wisdom Of Elders’ album from 2016. ‘We Are Sent Here By History’ is another deep, avant-garde/spiritual jazz set that unsettles and engages in equally measure : the urgent ‘Til The Freedom Comes Home’ seems to build and build in an almost hypnotic, trance like fever, the sharp contrast of the ballad ‘Teach Me How To Be Vulnerable’ shows another side but it’s the crashing, bustling cuts like ‘You’ve Been Called’ and the chant-like groove of ‘Beast Too Spoke Of Suffering’ that typify the feel of the set. This album really grows: deliberately uncomfortable and upfront it’s unfurls and slowly grabs your full attention. Highly recommended.
