First album from Phil Ayers’ London based smooth, funky jazz unit Detente, as the name suggests this is a collection of cover versions spanning a broad range of genres but each done with the same accomplished, slick Jazz touch that the group are masters at. Alphonse Mouzon’s jazz funker ‘By All Means’ is handled well, Stevie’s ‘I Wish’ retains the swagger of the original while classics such as ‘Mercy, Mercy, Mercy’ and ‘Serpentine Fire’ are arranged with aplomb. Horace Silver’s ‘Prescription For The Blues’ is an uplift, The Crusader’s ‘Stomp And Buck Dance’ grooves along while ‘Spiral’ is a tough, funky fusion number.
