Marvin Gaye’s legendary May 1972 concert in Washington D.C. features the singer’s only full album performance of the classic ‘What’s Going On’ although a delay in switching reel-to-reel tapes at the time resulted in the exclusion of “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” The live album also features Gaye’s lone live performances of four songs: “That’s The Way Love Is” and “You” – as part of the 13-minute concert-opening “Sixties Medley – along with “Right On” and “Wholy Holy”. There’s a real loose, organic feel to the arrangements and the crowd noises really send us back to the performance as it was, way back when. ‘What’s Going On’ and ‘Inner City Blues’ are performed twice in emphatic fashion while the pulsating ‘God Is Love’ thunders out. The stage dialogue further adds to the experience. This package includes photos from the show plus liner notes from David Ritz.
