Tenderlonious has made many solo albums and with his group Ruby Rushton on his 22a label over the past decade. His latest album. one of his Jazziest, ‘You Know I Care’ sees him playing with a quartet, covers of Spiritual Jazz compositions. He plays Alto Saxophones and Flute and is accompanied by Hamish Balfour on piano, Pete Martin on Bass and Tim Carnegie on Drums, who all play beautifully throughout.
‘On The Nile’ written by Charles Tolliver is a beautiful modal/spiritual jazz track that takes you on a journey, conjuring images of the great African River. Stanley Cowell’s ‘Maimoun’ is another uplifting number with slightly more tempo, that has some nice solos and a recurring theme. Wayne Shorter’s ‘Infant Eyes’ sees Tender playing Flute over a very downtempo version of this classic tune. Bill Lee’s ‘John Coltrane’ has been recorded many times over the decades most notably by Clifford Jordan on his epic ‘Glass bead Games’ album. Tenderlonious and crew put their own stamp on this lovely composition, Hamish putting in a great piano solo and Tender playing Sax, a nice version. Duke Pearson’s ballad ‘You Know i Care’ is given a sympathetic rendition with Tender on Flute and Hamish featuring on piano. Very nice and accomplished album.
